Espag Handle
Espag handles are the most popular type of handle that is found on windows made of upvc (they're also often used in aluminium and timber too). They feature an oval spindle that extends from the back of the handle and then enters into the multi-point lock mechanism that is attached to the window. The handle is used to control the locking system around the window.
Window handles from Espag come in many different styles and functions. Some come with an option to push-button to lock the' closed position and key-locking (and fire-escape non-locking where required). Many of them meet the Secure by Design specification to add an extra layer of security. They are also available with a variety of spindle sizes, which can be altered by using spindle sleeves to reduce the size of the spindles protruding from them.
The espagnolette handles we offer have been tested by Yale to ensure that they meet the strict standards you'd expect from such a reputable brand. They're suitable for timber, upvc and aluminum windows. We have a range of colours, and can match the handle to your existing hinges.
Another important aspect of handles made from espagnolette is their step height. This is the distance between the top of the handle and the point where it rests on the frame. It is crucial to have this in order to ensure a tight, secure fit. Most of our handle designs are 43mm apart between the screw hole centres, which is the industry standard.
As with other types of handles, you can choose between straight and cranked designs. Cranked handles are great for situations where the espagnolette handle will be situated close to the frame's edge because they provide more clearance for opening the window.
Our range of replacement handles for upvc includes a variety of finishes, styles, and colours that will suit the decor in your home, such as satin nickel, polished chrome, and antique brass. Some of our products even feature a soft-close mechanism to minimize the sound of your windows closing.
Cockspur Handle
The Cockspur Window Handle is a handle designed specifically for the designer who wants to offer their customers a fashionable and durable design. These handles are suited to either uPVC or aluminium windows and work by having an edge that is secured over the edge of the frame to secure the window. The window handle can be locked to ensure that it opens only when pushed, providing additional security. The handle is available in five different finishes, in both left and right handed. This allows the fabricators to cater for more windows.
These cockspur window handles are equipped with three packing pieces of differing thickness, which allows them to be adjusted to accommodate a wide range of backset sizes. Each piece of packing fits perfectly under the handle's nose and can be removed or added to the size of the step in order to create a different backset which ranges from 9mm up to 21mm. The handle is available in left and right handed versions and either a straight or curly nose design.
It is essential to determine the height of your current handle prior to purchasing a new handle to make sure it fits correctly. The wrong handle could cause a myriad of issues, including the inability of the window to close. This can be a nuisance for homeowners and could cause stress that is not needed.
A cockspur handle is a type of handle that can be found on older uPVC and timber windows, as well as some aluminium windows. These handles do not have any window locks integrated in contrast to the Espag handles that are found on modern windows and include shootbolts or Espagnolette bar lock.
The espagnolette (often reduced to 'espag') handle is the most popular handle type that can be found on new uPVC casement windows. When you turn the handle of the espagnolette it opens the Yale Encloser locking system which is much more secure than the traditional handle, such as a cockspur or British standard. This is because when you turn the handle espagnolette it turns multiple locks in the window frame to secure it.
Handle by turning and tilting

These windows are popular with people who want to increase ventilation in their home as well as add a layer of security. As their name suggests, these windows have a tilt and turn function that permits them to turn at 90 degrees to provide an opening of a smaller size or drop to a hopper-style design for complete ventilation. Dual functionality provides them with a stylish appearance which can enhance the appeal of your double glazed windows.
Tilt-and-turn windows are more complex than other double-glazed window designs, which increases the cost of installation. They require more components and more labour. Nevertheless, these windows are well worth the investment as they can increase the value of your home and provide a myriad of benefits.
One of the main benefits is that they allow you to clean your windows from inside without having to use external ladders. This is perfect for those who live in high-rise flats or buildings as it eliminates the necessity to walk outside and risk falling from an elevated height. Tilt and turn windows also provide additional security since windows are locked when in a tilted or turned position, so unwanted intruders cannot open them from the inside.

The uPVC replacement handle is typically a spindle based one and has a 7mm square spindle which is commonly found in lengths of 32mm, 38mm and 44mm. The base of this handle is also larger than other handles, which is why it's referred to as a "tilt-safe" window handle. It can only be opened after the window has been locked into a closed position or tilted.
If you want to replace the uPVC tilt and turn window handle it is necessary to take the handle off the window with an screwdriver. The screws are typically hidden behind a spring loaded backplate. Simply lift the backplate and twist it to reveal the two screw holes. Using a ruler or tape measure you can measure the distance between these two screws which is usually 43mm from centre to centre. Once you have the measurement, you can select the appropriate size handle to fit your uPVC windows.
